Throughout the nine T20 World Cups, Rohit Sharma and Shakib Al Hasan have experienced it all.

Rohit Sharma and Shakib Al Hasan are the only players to have participated in every edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and they are set to take on the challenge once again starting next month.

Both players were at the forefront of a new generation of cricketers when they debuted in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. They had impressive starts, showcasing their undeniable talent in South Africa.

Rohit Sharma's first innings in the tournament came during a crucial group match against South Africa in Durban in 2007. His maiden T20I fifty earned him the Player of the Match award and secured India's spot in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan played a crucial role in Bangladesh's stunning win over the West Indies in Johannesburg. At just 20 years old, Shakib dismantled the West Indies middle-order, finishing with figures of 4/34. This performance helped Bangladesh secure only their third victory in men's T20Is with an efficient run-chase.

In the tournament, Shakib ended with six wickets, while Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in India’s title win in the final against Pakistan. Coming in at 111/4, Rohit smashed 30 off just 16 balls, helping India post a total of 157, which proved to be just enough in a thrilling finale.

The 2009 tournament started well for Rohit Sharma, who scored 36 off 23 balls against Bangladesh before being dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan. He followed this with a fifty against Ireland, but subsequent games didn't go as well, and India exited in the second round.

One of Rohit's standout performances came in 2010 against Australia in Bridgetown. Chasing 185, he fought a lone battle, scoring an unbeaten 79 off 46 balls, with only one other Indian batter reaching double digits.

Shakib's highest score in the tournament came in 2012 against Pakistan in Kandy, where he hit 84 off 54 balls, although it wasn't enough to secure a win for Bangladesh.

The 2014 tournament was arguably the best for both players. Rohit was India's second-highest run-scorer as they reached the final, while Shakib excelled with both bat and ball, scoring 186 runs and taking eight wickets. Shakib's Player of the Match performance against Afghanistan, where he took 3 for 8, set the tone for Bangladesh in the home tournament.

In the 2014 tournament, Rohit Sharma shone with half-centuries in two of India's first three games, against the West Indies and Bangladesh, and contributed a quickfire cameo in the semi-final against South Africa in Mirpur. However, India lost the final to Sri Lanka, with Rohit scoring 29 off 26 balls at the top of the order.

Shakib Al Hasan had an excellent tournament with the ball in 2016 in India, taking 10 wickets in seven games, including a standout performance of 4/15 against Oman. His best tournament as a bowler came in 2021, where he claimed 11 wickets at an average of 11.18.

Shakib Al Hasan made two scores of over forty in the first round, but Bangladesh couldn't advance past Group 1. Rohit Sharma also had a strong personal performance that year, scoring two fifties in five games. However, India failed to reach the semi-finals after losses to Pakistan and New Zealand.

In 2022, Rohit captained India for the first time in a T20 World Cup. Although he had a modest tournament with the bat, scoring one half-century in six games, he led the team to the semi-finals. Shakib took six wickets in the tournament, including a crucial spell of 2/33 against India in Adelaide in a closely contested match.

Next month, the two stalwarts will once again appear at the T20 World Cup, each making their own comeback.

Rohit Sharma has returned to the Indian T20I team after a two-year absence and will lead the side. Shakib Al Hasan, sidelined for a couple of months with an eye injury, made a successful return to the Bangladesh team in May during the bilateral series against Zimbabwe.

India is in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, alongside Pakistan, Canada, and Ireland. Bangladesh is in Group D with South Africa, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and Nepal.
