Shaheen Afridi Confident in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Prospects
Speedster Shaheen Afridi is optimistic about Pakistan’s chances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, following near misses in recent editions. Afridi believes the team has a strong opportunity to clinch their second Men’s T20 World Cup title.
Speaking on the PCB Podcast, the left-arm fast bowler expressed confidence in Pakistan's potential, reflecting on their performances in the 2021 and 2022 tournaments.
“It’s not possible to put in the hard yards and not see results. Look at the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL; they worked hard for six years, developing players and, despite early struggles, they recently won back-to-back tournaments,” Shaheen said. “The Pakistan team is on a similar path, and we’re very close to achieving T20 World Cup glory.”
Shaheen Afridi Reflects on Past Near Misses and Eyes T20 World Cup Success
Shaheen Afridi recently reflected on Pakistan’s performances in the last two T20 World Cups, where the team came close but faltered at the final stages. In the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final, Shaheen played a crucial role but was hit for crucial runs by Matthew Wade in the 19th over, leading to Australia’s eventual victory. In the 2022 final, Shaheen injured his knee while fielding and couldn’t complete his spell against England. His absence left Pakistan a bowler short, allowing England to recover and secure their second title. “You’re disheartened if you get so close and still lose the World Cup. Both events were painful. We were hurt after the first loss [2021] and in the second event, I couldn’t help the side because I was injured. I tried my best to come back [on the field], but I wasn’t allowed to do so,” Shaheen said. However, Shaheen remains optimistic about Pakistan's chances in the upcoming tournament. “Our efforts during the World Cup will focus on playing as a united team. This isn’t a time for disagreements. Everyone should follow the same process in a united way to achieve a singular goal.” Shaheen highlighted the influence of newly appointed white-ball coach Gary Kirsten’s philosophy, emphasizing team unity over individual performances. “Gary [Kirsten] told us, ‘Don’t play for the name on the back of your jersey but for the badge in front of your shirt.’ That stayed with me,” Shaheen added. Reflecting on Pakistan’s historic win against India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where Shaheen took key wickets, he shared advice he received from Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi. “I called up Lala (Shahid Afridi) as his performance has always been the best against India. He advised me not to take any pressure and to give my best in all departments: bowling, batting, or fielding. So we tried our best and achieved success.” With lessons learned and a renewed focus, Shaheen Afridi and the Pakistan team are determined to overcome past disappointments and aim for T20 World Cup glory.
Shaheen Afridi Reflects on Key Wickets and Anticipates T20 World Cup Rematch
Shaheen Afridi recalled his pivotal role in Pakistan’s victory against India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he took crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli, shifting the game's momentum in Pakistan’s favor.
“If you pick the first three wickets against any side, you essentially break their back because the top three are very important to set the tone,” Shaheen said. “I always strive to attack more with the new ball. Early wickets make it easier for your bowlers since the openers can't get set and capitalize on the later overs.”
However, India avenged their loss in 2021 with a win in 2022, thanks to an outstanding 82* from Kohli. The highly anticipated rematch between the two sides is set for June 9, 2024, in New York.https://www.highcpmgate.com/c79f3n7mk?key=8af6ea64debac099a7605f4c89bb9c99
